Desni izbornik  >  European Capital of Culture (ECoC)
In the year 1985 Greek minister of culture Melina Mercouri initiated the start of the project European Capital of Culture with the aim of strengthening cultural and economic relations between European cities. So far, the title has been given to numerous cities around Europe such as: Athens, Glasgow, Krakow, Porto, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Stockholm, Dublin, Graz, Lille, Liverpool, Patras, Maribor, Marseille, Košice, Riga, Tallinn etc. By the year 2019 around 60 cities will carry an ECoC title.

This project has become one of the most prestigious and appreciated cultural initiatives in Europe. It is, above all, a cultural initiative, but it can also bring significant social and economic benefits, especially when it is a part of a long-term development strategy of a city.

According to Decision No 445/2014/EU of the European parliament and the Council of Europe of the 16th of April 2014 about establishing a Union action for the European Capitals of Culture for the years 2020 to 2033, one Croatian and one Irish city will become a European Capital of Culture for the year 2020.

The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia published the Call for submission of applications for the European Capital of Culture Union action for the year 2020 in the Republic of Croatia on the 11th of June 2014. The Call consists of information and documents required for the application process of Croatian cities.
